Sex Postions and Male Marginalization in Hentai

Apparently I’ve gotten a few of you hooked on hentai! *evil laugh* ^_~

Jim (no, not this Jim) recently asked me why he keeps seeing doggy style in the hentai he’s been finding. He wondered if I thought it might be a Japanese obsession.

I explained that I don’t think it’s only one cultural group who has an obsession with doggy style – I think MANY cultures do.

I have seen A LOT of hentai over the years and I have found that if any positions stand out, they are the following:
Man on top (usually leaning back)
Woman on top (usually sitting up)
and, of course, Doggy style.

My hypothesis is that these three positions are the most popular positions in hentai because in mainstream (i.e. hetero) hentai, the focus is on the female character(s) and these three positions allow for the woman to be penetrated, fondled, and otherwise “sexed up” without having the male characters intrude into a given image any more than they have to.

Of course there are exceptions, but overall the male characters are not meant to take away any attention from the female characters. In fact, frequently the male characters are not even fully included in an image – typically they are cut off before the head – sometimes you’ll only see a cock and a bit of hips (and often an arm or hand) extending into the frame from “off camera”. Sort of a POV thing.

Even when their heads are not cut off, male characters are sometimes drawn with less detail (except for their cocks, if they are uncensored), and almost always have their eyes either covered by their hair or in shadow.

These are all clever devices to help keep the average viewer from being distracted by the male characters – keeping your eye on the female characters, where it is assumed you want to be looking anyway. Maybe that way it’s easier to imagine that it’s you squeezing and penetrating her.

I also don’t think this trend is unique to hentai, I’ve seen some of the same things done in “regular” porn too.

What do you think?

I think you should continue posting Hentai.

    :D

  • Strumpet

I love all the Hentai in your posts. I save all the pics.

    I think it rocks.

No matter what position their in.

  • lildirtynini

And I noticed that all the Hentai gals have big breasts…

But regardless, the Hentai pics are hot…
    Keep posting!

  • JeN

I’ve seen my fair share of it too.
Oddly enough, I think the plotline (minus allt he tentacle rape) of “La Blue Girl” is pretty good.

We will definitely have to have a hentai night!

  • DZER

I think you got nailed and gave head … I mean, hit the nail on the head … heh

love comic sex … sad but true ;)

  • waha`

yeah, you pretty much hit it on the hetero scale. I guess hentai tries to be as mainstream as regular porn as well so its marketable. I mean there have been attempts to market it in different way w/ or sans the sexual positions, but it doesn’t seem to have that same effectiveness.

  • Aragorn

Very true ! YEs, there is a bias towards these positions and I have asked myself why as well … Thanks, fun analysis … – A

Just remember who is drawing the Henti. Last I looked it was men.

  • Shay

    AAG – Will do! ^_~

Strumpet – you save them? cool! I hope you’re remembering to click to get the bigger versions. ^_~

Nini – not all, but I usually post the ones with big breasts for a reason that I will go into later…

JeN – haha we should! If you like La Blue Girl, you’ll like F3 I bet! ^_^

Dzer – or maybe a little of both ^_~

Waha – Is it marketing or is it just trends in common.

    Aragorn – ^_~ thanks sweety!

W&W – yup, so clearly they also have an idea of what other men are going to want to see.

Speaking as a former amateur comic book artist I think the answer’s even simpler than that.

    1) Most comic book artists are male and adolescent of temperament (if not always age) and they see hentai as a way to represent the kind of women they wish they could have sex with. The characters are represented as very young because the artists and intended audience are working out fantasies of their own adolescence.

    2) They are interested in drawing (lovingly) all the girl parts they want to see and often pride themselves on the idealized “accuracy” of their representations. Putting men “in the way” totally defeats the purpose of displaying their skill (not to mention the fantasized-over naughty bits.)

    3) At least in hetero/”lesbian” hentai they’re not interested in or are uncomfortable with representations of male sexuality. As in much of industrial hetero porn men appear only as necessary accessories. If you want to see (or “accurately” represent) a woman’s vulva during penetration they sort of have to draw something male, but since the male characters are there only to support the depiction of the female characters it’s fine to crop them down to a bit of belly and cock. I think the whole tentacle-porn and hermaphrodite thing is so common in hentai because it dispenses with identifiable male characters altogether.

    4) There’s a principle in comics theory (yes, there’s a fairly well-developed school of comics theory) that readers can get deeper into the work if their point-of-view proxy isn’t as well represented, which argues against complete depictions of the actual protagonist (as opposed to the nominal, almost always female “victim/protagonist” in hentai.)

    5) Hentai rendering is incredibly personalized from a reader’s point of view. Based on body angles, perspective rendering, and the projected point of focus of the subject character’s eyes, it’s pretty easy to see that the hentai girl is sitting on the reader’s cock, looking into his (the target demographic’s) eyes. Even when it’s impossible to project one’s self into the penetrating character’s role the female characters are represented in a way that invites the reader to enter the scene (and the female character) as a partner in a three-way.

So: Neither the artists nor the readers they have in mind are interested in seeing men’s bits unless they’re represented in a way that helps them insert themselves into the scene.

Of course I could be mistaken about all that.

I always click to make it bigger.

And, I’m way kinds of excited to hear about the big breast reasoning.

  • Shay

Fig – thanks so much, that was a facinating expansion on what I was saying. tsk you and your eloquence.

    Strumpet – excellent ^_~

  • jim

I KNEW there was a good deal of psychology behind all of this, whether it has additional cultural overtones or not — good job, Fig.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I need to go “insert myself into a scene” . . . lol.

Read this posting, and the one earlier in the blog you linked to, but in neither place found any recommendations for good sites to find hentai. Searching on google turns up all sorts of sites, unfortunately of the same quality as you’ll generally find searching google for porn of any sort.

So, for the person just beginning to get an interest in hentai, are there some sites you can recommend?

  • waha`

Just want to point out that even though most amateur artists are men, some of the more intensely drawn hentai works have been done by female artists. Though few in their count, I’ve seen some of their stuff and they focus a lot on positions, but I find their art quite exceptional.

  • LovesDarkness

I just really wish there was more GIRL friendly hentai that wasn’t all guy-on-guy. I’m a girl…and I DON’T like yaoi…so it’s really hard for me to find good girl friendly hentai where you CAN see the guy. I wish there was more of it T.T
