What Makes Porn Porn?

I just want to know how far a show has to go to be a porno.

I can only assume that this question is from a reader who is desperate to participate in The S Spot Porn Experiment (which will be wrapping up soon!) but isn’t sure what he can watch. ^_~

I guess what qualifies as porn can be a trickier question than one might expect. I would say that what makes a porn a porn is the presentation of sexually explicit material (boobs, genitalia, masturbation, sex, etc) with the intention of sexually arousing the audience. So, just because you get a hard-on watching “So You Think You Can Dance” doesn’t make it a porn, because the intention of the producers wasn’t to help you get off. Similarily, just because you really do watch Baby Blues for the plot doesn’t mean that it isn’t porn.
But, you can consider the majority of the hentai that I use on my site porn, because these images were drawn (and I post them) with the intention to turn people on.

I hope that answers your question.

What do you think readers? What makes a porn pornographic?

I think you’ve pretty much nailed it. And, no, there’s no pun there.

Also, I thought I was just about the only person who knew about the Baby Blue movies. I didn’t really think anyone else was watching CityTV that late.

Yay Canada?

hah, I used to watch the Baby Blue every Friday night after I got home from wherever I had been out - and I used to get more sucked into the plot lines than the sex (seriously, sometimes it was a murder mystery)!

“the intention of the producers wasn’t to help you get off”

Are you sure of that ? :) Eroticism seems like a pretty good way to keep an audience, especially if it is not explicit and thus not directly linked with any kind of taboo.

Uh yeah, I’m pretty sure that the target audience of “So you Think You Can Dance” isn’t the minute number of people who are sitting at home jerking off to their show.

Well, Can you act in porn? Perhaps.
Personally I think Porn is what what stated (naked people with the idea watchers will be “interested” in them) WITHOUT acting. If acting was in the movie then it wouldn’t be a porno it’ll be a movie that shows naughty bits.

Personally I have always preferred “Dancing With the Stars” ;-)

Wait a minute. Isn’t this the definition of porn that gets us in trouble with different people (and communities) who have different standards of what they find (or fear others find) sexually arousing? So there isn’t any such thing as erotic writing, because that’s just gilding the lily.

Anon3 - Well, I think the many studios in porno valley would agree that there is a certain amount of acting involved in porn - they still weave a light plot around the sex to engage the audience. *cough* Sometimes just pure fucking doesn’t do it for everyone who watches porn. But, to me, there’s a difference between something like “Pirates” and “Shortbus”, because the sex scenes in the latter are meant more to move the plot and develop the characters rather than just to turn you on, as in the former.

Rich - you are a nut!

Prospero - really? I feel like this definition should keep people out of trouble, because it’s all about the intention behind the production, not necessarily the actual effect that it has on others.

Shay, you post those great hentai pics with the intention of turning us on? You sly kitsune! =P

Nah, truthfully, I’ve masturbated while cruising the S Spot on a few occasions. XD I come here primarily for the great information and community, though. ^_^

After all of the topics we have been through together, I can’t believe you didn’t solicit my input into this question. Ha-ha! Keep up the great work Shay.

damn, that’s a good question.

these are my criteria:
(if any one of these are met, it’s porn)

1. someone is “cussing” (”oh yeah, fuck me!”
2. there is a money shot
3. terrible acting
4. when they’re done they’re not laying under half a sheet (every frigg’n movie, come on! i dont’ know about you, but when i have sex everything goes flying)
5. everyone has multiple orgasams

Another site, too long ago for me to remember which one, defined porn as “any type of media that you suddenly lose interest in after masturbating.” It’s a surprisingly robust definition. =D
