Here’s another entry in the “didja know?” file: Did you know that there’s actually a Japanese term for falling in love with fictional characters? If I remember right, it was something like “nichikon fetchi” (I don’t remember the actual term, unfortunately–I only encountered it once, and I sometimes have a mind like a sieve…). I DO remember the English translation: “two-dimensional fetish”. I suppose it should worry me that this osrt of thing occurs so often amongst otaku that they had to coin a special term for it, but then again, since I fell in love with Rinoa the first time I played Final Fantasy 8 (but got over it later), I don’t feel quite so foolish… I agree with Shay–it’s one thing to fall in love with a fictional character (or have a crush on one), but it’s totally another to get so obsessed with that character that you can’t interact with real people of your preferred gender.
