Column News

The paper that I write for had their staff lunch and award ceremony yesterday afternoon
and guess what! Your very own little Shay took home the award for Column of the Term!
*pauses for applause*

In other news pertaining to my column, I got my second ever piece of hate mail! And since it was sent as a letter to the editor, it was printed in this Friday’s issue! I thought it was pretty hilarious and so did the staff, in fact, they even made a line from it the quote of the week!
Here, read it for yourself:

To the editor, As I was browsing through the paper and enjoying the university produced articles, I came across a particular section that came as a shock to me. Thinking there was some hidden innuendo, I went on to read an article focused on anal pleasures.
This article was not only appalling, but was also absolutely unnecessary. There is no need to go into detail and explain how to give or receive any type of sexual act. What some people may consider to be pleasurable, others may find offensive. If people want to experiment sexually on their own time, that’s fine, but it doesn’t need to be shared with the entries student body. I don’t see why this article would be included in the school newspaper. In the future, I would like to see articles that are more education and beneficial to people. What will be the feature next week, oral sex or doggy style?
(bolding added by me)

I think what we all found particularly funny is that my column is considered very educational AND we’re all pretty sure that I’ve already written about oral sex and doggy style in the paper. ^_~

I also think it’s funny that, considering how much MORE explicit my blog is in comparison to my newspaper column, I have not received any hate mail or negativity regarding The S Spot.
It’s a mad mad world.

    hmmmm…
    oral or doggy style…

you know, i’ve never thought of trying to comapre the two. but how would it be to combine the two
    (if there’s a way i’ll find it)

as for the person who wrote the hate-mail, i could go into the whole “they are obviously not having sex” but i won’t. instead i’ll just have to say that they did miss one thing, the article is quite educational and beneficial (if i know our little Shay…)

i think this falls into my theory of the “whore in the painting” theory. some people can’t enjoy something naughty without feeling naughty themselves, and if they think it’s bad the only way they can enjoy it (on their level) is to condem it. “i’m not watching porn, i’m looking at a bunch of sluts and whores

the fact that they read the entire article and then took the time to write a e-mail about it shows they enjoyed it. after if they didn’t like it they should have stopped reading it.

because after all, if you don’t like anal, then reading a long article about it would be a total pain in the ass!
    hehehe

Your last paragraph assumes many variables. For example, most people that find their way here, if offended, can simply scurry away with a single mouse click. This requires less energy than turning the page of the campus rag.

First, congratulations on your award! Yaaay!!! ^_^

Also, considering the hatemail you received, my thoughts are that this person’s problem was the fact that it was in a newspaper. I think the best way to say it is this: the article, in the context of a newspaper, was not what the reader expected of newspapers in general (news culture maybe?). But on your blog, it’s no shock to your readers since they came here looking for exactly this content.

    Just my observation.

It’s an awesome thing that you do. Please keep up the good work!

I enjoy reading your blog and I find it very informative. If this is any indication of the types of articles you would write in your school newspaper, then I can only assume that they are equally well written and educational.

Being able to talk about sex freely and seriously is very important for university students especially. We all need to know basics (especially about STI’s and other dangers), but it is also important for us to share experiences. Who doesn’t want to know that they’re doing it right (or not)? Who isn’t curious about what other people consider normal?

Showing interest in information about sex, even if its about something that you personally would not like to try, shows a willingness to be a better lover and partner, and what could possibly be wrong with that?

“Everyone should be as neurotic and conflicted about sex as I am! Damn it!”

  • Momentarily_Distracted

Sometimes it’s good to have letters like these: it shows that you are making people think.

  • horny guy

    congrats!

  • ArtfulDodger

Yeah Shay!! That is sooooo awesome, I sure hope you got some kind of uber cool trophy or plaque or something, at least a discount coupon! ;)

As for hate mail, someone once said, if everyone likes you then you aren’t living. I think that says it all.

    CONGRATULATIONS SHAY!!!

I say it was the kegal ninjas! ;-)

Congrats on your award. Once again you are the best writer on campus. I guess you have to have at least one ignorant prude that hides behind the guise of morals reading your column in the paper. Next time i think they should write a complaint that doesn’t make people laugh.

  • Shay

exile – I agree! Why did she keep reading?! I bet she was sorry she waited so long to pick up a copy of the paper!^_~

Visile – really? I think people would get stuck reading a webpage longer.

Rustie – haha well it is a campus paper that prints the word “fuck” regularly…

    Anon – thanks! I will ^_~

Lori – I agree, I think it’s important to have an informative sex column in a university paper! In fact, they should appear in regular city papers, but I doubt that’s going to happen any time soon.

    Gadfly – hahaha!

M_D – I’m actually disappointed that it took so long to get one!

    HG – thanks! ^_^

Art – You know, I DID get a gift card and a really nice piece of paper – pretty sweet, eh?

Stealth – thanks haha, that or the prostate play.

CayJ – ugh? Why would you wish boring or annoying hate mail on me? I prefer the ones that make people laugh.

  • AlwaysArousedGirl

    Congrats, Shay.

Ignore the troll. There are everywhere. :)
